Thunderheart (1992) is a neo-Western mystery thriller directed by Michael Apted, starring Val Kilmer as Ray Levoi, a half-Sioux FBI agent sent to investigate the murder of a tribal council member on a South Dakota Native American reservation. Assigned due to his heritage, Levoi is paired with veteran agent Frank "Cooch" Coutelle (Sam Shepard), but as he uncovers the truth, he becomes entangled in a conspiracy involving uranium mining, government corruption, and a deep-rooted conflict between the radical Aboriginal Rights Movement (ARM) and the pro-government tribal council. As Levoi reconnects with his Sioux roots, he is guided by local sheriff Walter Crow Horse (Graham Greene), who believes he is the reincarnated spirit of Thunderheart, a Native hero. The film, loosely inspired by the 1973 Wounded Knee incident and the real-life events surrounding Leonard Peltier, blends mystery, spirituality, and political activism, culminating in a powerful revelation about land exploitation and systemic injustice.
