The Sugarland Express (1974) is Steven Spielberg's first theatrical feature film, starring Goldie Hawn and William Atherton as a couple who break out of prison to reclaim their baby from foster care, leading to a statewide chase across Texas. Based on a true story, the film follows the couple as they take a police officer hostage, becoming unlikely folk heroes during their flight to Sugarland, Texas, to get their son back before he's permanently adopted. It was a critical success, winning the Best Screenplay award at Cannes, and marked the first collaboration between Spielberg and composer John Williams.
