When Fallout first hit the scene in 1997, it looked far differently than it does now. The first and second installments were actually isometric RPGs with deep gameplay and narratives. When Bethesda took over the series in 2008, it became the first-person action RPG we now know it to be.

The legendary development studio has managed to transform Fallout's identity over the course of two full sequels as well as the subject of this page: an MMORPG set in the Fallout universe known as Fallout 76.

The latest title is frequently updated with new content and lore, and enjoys an average monthly player count of roughly 10 million. Like most online games, Fallout 76 has a laundry list of currencies and cosmetics that can be obtained with the help of microtransactions. As always, Gameflip is here to help you save some coin on the digital goods you want!

What is Fallout 76?

Always rep your Home Vault. (Image Source: Fallout.Bethesda.net)

Fallout 76 is an action MMORPG that drops players into the unforgiving world of Fallout 25 years after the nuclear war that turned most of the planet's surface into an irradiated wasteland. Because of this timeline, Fallout 76 actually acts as a prequel to the previous games in the series and fills out many blindspots in the series' lore.

Players take control of a member of Vault 76, which is the namesake of the game. Vault 76 is located in "Appalachia", which is the Fallout universe's term for West Virginia. The massive map is split up into six regions that each have separate day/night cycles and weather, and up to 24 players can exist and cooperate within it on a single server.

Like the previous installments in Bethesda's Fallout franchise, weapons can be found all over the wasteland or purchased from vendors using bottle caps. Why did everyone default to using bottle caps as money? Your guess is as good as mine. You can also buy a currency called Atoms with real money, and that's used in the Atomic Shop to purchase a range of cosmetics. This is where Gameflip comes in, but we'll get to that in a later section.

Where Can You Play Fallout 76?

If you're looking to dig into the dangers of the American Wasteland, then you can pick up and play Fallout 76 on the following platforms:

  • PlayStation 4

  • Xbox One

  • Steam

  • Windows PC

You might be curious why there aren't any current-gen consoles featured on that list, and there's a good reason for that.

Fallout 76 hasn't been officially released for PS5 or Xbox Series consoles as of November 2023. HOWEVER, players who own the game on a previous-gen platform can enjoy it on a PS5 or Xbox Series console tied to the same account, and an update to the game that rolled out in June 2023 allows those versions to run at full 4k/60fps! Talk about getting your money's worth!

Unfortunately, if you're hoping to team up with friends on a different platform, that's not currently possible. Fallout 76 completely lacks cross-play, though that may change in the future.

What Kind of Items Can You Buy in Fallout 76?

Score some sweet cosmetics at the Atomic Shop. (Image Source: Fallout.Bethesda.net)

The developers at Bethesda Softworks have created a nifty little place to buy all kinds of in-game items and cosmetics, and it's called the Atomic Shop.

There are a few of the things that can be purchased at the Atomic Shop:

  • Apparel

  • Bundles

  • C.A.M.P. Constructs

  • Emotes

  • Icons

  • Photomode Items

  • Skins

  • Styles

  • Utility Items

  • Fallout 1st

Now, all of these items in the Atomic Shop have to be purchased with a special currency called Atoms. Atoms aren't necessarily hard to come by, but they aren't really cheap either. If you want to deck out your player character and enhance your Fallout 76 experience without dropping a bundle on microtransactions, you can score steep discounts on Gameflip.

How Do I Get More Atoms?

Atoms can be earned through a variety of player actions, such as completing challenges, climbing the ranks of the Scoreboard, or by coughing up some real-world money.

That's right, Fallout 76 wants more money from your wallet for cosmetics. Hey, at least all of the new content is always free!

If the grind of obtaining Atoms through challenges is taking too long for you, here is what you can expect to pay for various amounts of Atoms:

  • 500 Atoms - $5.00

  • 800 + 300 bonus Atoms - $7.99

  • 1,000 + 100 bonus Atoms - $9.99

  • 2,000 + 400 bonus Atoms - $19.99

  • 4,000 + 1,000 bonus Atoms - $39.99

As you can see, Atoms generally run $1 for 100 Atoms, with differing amounts of bonus Atoms being given out depending on the amount you buy. Interestingly, these packs of Atoms can be only purchased digitally for most platforms with the exception of Xbox, which also has physical Fallout 76 gift cards that can be purchased in stores.

What is Fallout 1st?

Fallout 1st is a subscription service for Fallout 76. It's structured much like a Fortnite Battle Pass in that you pay a specified amount each month (that can be paid in Atoms or real money), and you get a host of perks with a continued subscription. Among those perks are: private servers for you and your friends, 1,650 Atoms to spend in the Atomic Shop, and exclusive perks like emotes and other cosmetics.

Will My Fallout 76 Gift Card Work on Any Platform?

Due to how Fallout 76 is structured, it's not possible to have a single Fallout 76 gift card work on every platform. You need to purchase the correct Atom pack for the platform that you spend time on.

That means PlayStation players will need to buy Atoms through the PlayStation Store, Xbox players through the Xbox Store, and Steam players through Steam. This can be a minor annoyance if you play on different platforms at the same time, but since your progress wouldn't carry over anyway, it's not too big of a loss.

The benefit of this arrangement is that you get instant delivery of your Atoms after you buy them. And, don't forget, the sellers on the Gameflip marketplace have the best prices on all of the gift cards that can help you get more Atoms, whether it be a PSN gift card or a Fallout 76 gift card for Xbox.
