In the near future, levels of atmospheric toxin reached unprecedented heights. An experiment with a breakdown to the ground using genetically modified microbes to eat and decompose toxins into less dangerous molecules was introduced into the atmosphere by governments around the world.
This step was successful. However, a few months after that, things went wrong, which led to a persistent toxic fog and unstable weather, as well as the appearance of unknown eerie toxic creatures called "Breeds."
World governments deployed military and other law enforcement officials to maintain order, as well as to protect civilians. However, everything is out of control, with safe zones created around the world to protect surviving civilians.
